Esperanza y cambio. Relato de una familia mexicana migrante en Canadá

El 5 de octubre pasado, CBC Calgary publicó una de tantas historias de cambio (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/ivan-limas-renting-taradale-1.6604151). Es la historia de una familia mexicana que migró a Canadá, huyendo de una realidad cada vez más común para quienes viven en México: la violencia y precariedad en la vida cotidiana.

El padre de familia, Iván Limas, viajó primero para asentarse, buscar trabajo y trasladar a su familia. La esperanza de una mejor vida fue lo que los llevó a migrar; y, en su camino, han encontrado esa mejoría y también esperanza. 

Pero el costo no ha sido bajo... han tenido que superar las distintas barreras que se les presenta a quienes migran: aprender un idioma diferente y encontrar un trabajo cuyo sueldo sea suficiente para la vida familiar. 

En México, tanto Iván como su esposa, Alejandra Enriques, eran maestros de educación básica. En Canadá, como otros tantos migrantes, tuvieron que buscar nuevas opciones laborales. Al igual que otras historias, la experiencia laboral fuera de Canadá no cuenta. Lo que hayas estudiado o en lo que hayas trabajado en tu país de origen, muchas veces no es valorado. Se tiene que hacer "experiencia de trabajo canadiense".

Así, Iván y Alejandra están buscando abrirse camino: ella está aprendiendo inglés y limpiando casas con su esposo. Alejandra sueña con trabajar en el sector de cuidado infantil y en abrir un restaurante.

Iván, además del empleo que comparte con su esposa, tiene otro de control de tráfico durante las noches. Además, los fines de semana Iván toma un curso. Sus horas de sueño son entre cuatro y cinco. Él dice que son suficientes.

Sus hijos van a la escuela. Tienen la esperanza de entrar a la Universidad y seguir mejorando su vida. 

Esperanza y cambio son los componentes de ésta y otras historias que iremos compartiendo en este Blog.

Hope and change. Story of a Mexican migrant family in Canada

On October 5, CBC Calgary published one of many change stories (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/ivan-limas-renting-taradale-1.6604151). It is the story of a Mexican family that migrated to Canada, fleeing from an increasingly common reality for those who live in Mexico: violence and precariousness in everyday life.

The father of the family, Ivan Limas, traveled first to settle down, look for work and move his family. The hope of a better life was what led them to migrate; and, on their way, they have found that improvement and hope.

But the cost has not been low... they have had to overcome the different barriers that are presented to those who migrate: learning a different language and finding a job that pays enough for family life.

In Mexico, both Iván and his wife, Alejandra Enriques, were elementary school teachers. In Canada, like so many other migrants, they had to look for new job options. Like other stories, work experience outside of Canada doesn't count. What you have studied or what you have worked on in your country don’t count. You must have "Canadian work experience".

Thus, Ivan and Alejandra are looking to make their way: she is learning English and cleaning houses with her husband. Alejandra dreams of working in the childcare sector and opening a restaurant.

In addition to the house-cleaning job, Ivan is doing traffic control overnight for a construction company. On weekends Ivan goes to school. He sleeps four or five hours. He says that´s enough.

Their children go to school. They hope to get into college and continue to improve their lives.
